Driving Distractions: What are the Biggest Ones?

Distracted driving is becoming increasingly more prevalent on the nation's highways, but what exactly is distracted driving? What are the biggest driving distractions and how do you avoid them?

Distracted Driving Defined

Simply put, distracted driving is anything that takes the driver's eyes (and mind) off the task of driving, the road ahead and the other drivers on the surrounding roads. This presents a serious safety hazard to the driver, other drivers, pedestrians, and property.

The Biggest Distractions

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there are almost 30,000 distracted driving fatalities on the nation's highways annually. With the increased use of cellphones and onboard features in cars, distracted driving is becoming more common. Some of the biggest distractions include:

  1. Using your cellphone while driving is a major distraction with texting and driving behind a huge culprit. Of the 30,000 distracted driving fatalities, almost 400 are due to texting and driving.
  2. Outside distractions are also a source of distracted driving. If you are looking at something on the side of the road, you are not paying attention to the cars in front of you.
  3. Traveling with your pets can create distracted driving even if your pet is in an appropriate kennel.
  4. Passengers in your car can distract you from the highway. Make sure your passengers are taking your attention off the highway.
  5. Daydreaming is another distracted driving concern. Sometimes referred to as "zoning out," this is hazardous.
  6. Eating, drinking a drink, smoking, putting on make-up, or other non-driving activities can distract you from the road ahead.
  7. Another huge distraction is adjusting the radio or the temperature in your car. If you have a passenger, let them control the radio and thermostat.

You can avoid issues with distractions by pulling off the road to use your cellphone, check on pets or children, or to eat a meal without putting yourself and others at risk. Also, make sure you keep your car serviced so it is safe for the highway. To get your vehicle serviced, give All Valley Car Care a call today.
